FIELD TRIP: Grant Farms with the Plakmeyer Family

On Thursday, July 23, we took a trip to see an operating produce farm in Grant. We were able to see and touch a variety of crops growing and guess what they were. Mr. Plakmeyer has been farming his entire life. After visiting all the different kinds of fields, we visited Mr. P's greenhouses. For lunch we went to his house and ate a delicious grilled hot dog lunch provided by Mr. P's family! What a treat!

Do you remember what Mr. P let us pick to take home with us?
What did it smell like? Could we eat the leaf?

Here's one of Mr. P's storage buildings.
What vegetable does he put in here for a week to dry out?

What does this big machine do for the crops?

At Mr. P's greenhouses we saw how plants get started.
What was happening in this greenhouse? Why did we need to stay out of it?
Do you remember what crop he was starting to grow?

This greenhouse was growing a special plant we usually see around Christmas time.
Do you remember what it's called?
What was so special about the leaf of this plant?
Should you let your dog or little sibling eat it?

Here's Mr. P's home garden.
What were some of the plants he showed us here?

After learning so much from Mr. P, we were starving!
His family provided a delicious lunch of grilled hot dogs and fresh watermellon! Yum!

We think it's safe to say that someone in our class liked the fresh watermellon! Wowzers!

After lunch we enjoyed lots of fun activities!
We had quite a few trying to convince Mr. P to let them drive...
never the less, they took the ride too :)

Basketball with Mr. Joel:

And let's not forget... catching FROGS!

FIELD TRIP: Post Family Farms

Check out what's "growing" at Post Family Farms!

What was so cool about the eggs that Ms. Julie was showing us here?
Do they look like the ones at your house?
Remember where they came from?
(Click below to find out...)
How many eggs does a chicken lay each day?

The Pigs - Are they really as "dirty" as people think?
What do pigs NOT have that people do to cool them off?

Our hayride around the farm - look at all that yummy sweet corn:

Do you remember what's growing here?

What do they call this piping?
What is it for?

How about this?  Why do farmers need these?

And last but not least... everybody's favorite...
the ZIP LINE!

Our class thinks we need one of these at school!
Just about everyone took a ride... teachers included :)

As you can see, we had a great day visiting Post Family Farms!  Ms. Julie kept us very busy and showed us so many cool things.  We thank her for such a wonderful time!

We had a great time at the Wyoming Public Library today! We spent time looking for an easy, medium, and hard book to check out. We found books about birds, Hannah Montana, wrestling, President Obama, and a lot of others. We are excited to spend time reading our new books!

We also did centers today: we worked on subtraction in math, asking good questions in reading, and learning our states. We also played a reading game where we had to find the main idea of a short story.

We are excited to learn more about healthy produce in Michigan when we go to Taste of the Farm at the Meijer Gardens tomorrow!
